Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the whole clove of garlic (if desired) and sauté for one minute.
Add the asparagus and saute for 1-2 minutes on high heat.
Add 2-3 tablespoons of water, cover with a lid and cook for about 7-8 minutes, turning occasionally.
Remove the lid, turn up the heat and let any remaining liquid evaporate.
Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
Serve hot, with a drizzle of lemon juice or with Parmesan shavings for a richer touch.
If you prefer, you can use butter instead of oil.
